Singapore Advances Into New Digital Cinema Frontier With Christie

CYPRESS, CA – (September 29, 2006) – Christie, a leading provider of visual solutions for business, entertainment and industry, is pleased to announce Singapore has become the first country in Southeast Asia to advance into the next frontier in Digital Cinema. S’pore Discovery Centre (SDC), the country’s premiere edutainment attraction, has installed a Christie CP2000 DLP Cinema® projector to expand its traditional 2D and 3D movie offerings to include Digital 3D screenings.

Featuring Singapore’s largest flat screen, the 344-seat iWERKS theatre is now home to the world’s brightest Digital Cinema projector – the Christie CP2000. Unlike traditional 3D theatres, which deploy two projectors, the new generation of Digital 3D technology is more cost effective as it only needs one projector to screen two separate frame-accurate and synchronous digital images for the left and right eyes. By using polarized passive 3D glasses, the audience will only see the images meant for each eye and enjoy excellent high quality 3D effects. Played through GDC Technology’s SA1000 DSR™ Digital Film Server, the Digital 3D content is projected on to a five storey high screen using a Christie CP2000 Digital Cinema projector to fill the entire field of human vision – creating a captivating and exhilarating cinematic experience.

“The new projector has no mechanical component because it is all electronic, thus easier to maintain as there will be less wear and tear. Compared to conventional 3D projectors, the Christie CP2000 does not require threading and set-up is fast and hassle free,” says Jordan Woo, General Manager of SDC.

As a pioneer with more than 76 years in the cinema industry, Christie has been a leading force in the active launch of 3D Digital Cinema technology. The company together with Texas Instruments and top Hollywood directors introduced the technology at the Showest 2005 screening of “3D: New Dimensions in Digital Cinema”. By the end of 2005, the Christie CP2000 was part of a turnkey Dolby Digital Cinema system installed in 84 specially-selected, high-profile theatres used to premiere Disney's “Chicken Little” - the first 3D movie released digitally that took advantage of enhanced 3D capabilities built into the Christie DLP Cinema projectors.

“According to recent statistics, digital 3D screenings resulted in more than average earnings per screen than 2D releases. This means that Digital 3D technology can boost a movie's appeal and draw moviegoers back to theatres as the cinematic experience is far more realistic and compelling from conventional 2D movies,” comments Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “By using the latest in Digital 3D technology, SDC will definitely uphold its position as Singapore’s foremost edutainment hub.”

Why do you want to be a Filmmaker ?

I was sitting in the last row , as usual, in a seminar about filmmaking. The seminar was conducted by a popular director .While many film students were present in the hall eager to learn few tips and tricks of filmmaking, the directors first question was " Why do you want to be a filmmaker ".
I was in other end of hall , relaxing myself looking at few girls in the front ,wondering what would be my answer . It doesn't matter anyway, as i imagined students in front row must start to tell, why they wanna be a filmmaker, for me to have enough options to choose from.

As if the director knew my thoughts, he immediately said " Lets start from last row ".( I was starring at one of the girl in front row ).When few students turned to me, i said
" i want to convey human emotions beautifully on screen ".
It wasn't a bad answer .I had always said this to myself , that someday, i will portray beautiful flow of emotions on screen.

When it passed on to other students,I heared many saying " Fame, Money, Its my passion,I want a job,.......". Finally ,i did hear a answer the director was expecting ." I want to tell Good stories "

Thats when i realized, my answer is not convincing. There can be no emotions with out a story.Well, we all know that movies primarily requires a story but there are many other aspects in filmmaking that occupies our mind and in the end, story suffers.

I decided to write this article to let filmmakers remember what they already know.Weave your story so beautifully that it leaves a legacy for the world.Good stories are need of the moment and the world is starving for good stories.

Many who read this, might already be working on their project or dreaming to work in near future. Before you work for shooting, work for words.

Time to write :

If you say " I dont have time to write",
It actually means ,you dont have interest in writing .

Start writing
write today
write Now

If you wanna be in films ,even before u start to think of an idea to write , just start writing and write as long as you can.Well, before writing a story or a screenplay you might ask me
" should i not learn how to write screenplay for movies or may be attended a workshop or seminar ? "

The fact is, Art emerges as you start creating it . If you can write 30 pages in 30 days about the story or concept you wish to tell, probably you will learn by yourself .This is to motivate yourself to actually work on your passion to create something .
Many find it hard to start writing and will spend enormous time believing that they are still in search of an idea.Thats the reason i wrote all the above words.First use time to actually focus your mind on sitting in a place and start writing.
Once you start doing it, the rest will follow.

Learn how to write screenplay :

The next step is to learn the techniques to tell your story. The art of screen writing. There are many good books available to help you understand how to tell a story , story structure and the way it must be written.Reading a couple of these books will make you realize the mistakes you did while writing your story and concept with out actually learning how its done professionaly. There are no mistakes in filmmaking, its just a creative journey from one step to another.

What kind of story works :
A good story must create settings and charecters so unique that the audience feel they are experiencing something new.

To create innovative stories, never get stuck with a concept that
resembles the usual. If your story is conventional , your charecters and setting will also be very usual which will never create a impact in viewers mind.

Most successful stories are the one where the events occur in a unsual setting. It might seem ordinary for the writer to set his story in a village in Africa. The new culture subconciously attracts the audience thus ordinary becomes extraordinary. Though the setting is very unusual, the charecter must have a human touch in which the audience can identify themselves.

Involving audience into the story :

Grab the audience attention and make them get involved in the charecters and their needs.Your responsibility as writer is first to write every scene clearly so that the audience can understand it and secondly they have curiousity and anticipation about whats going to happen next.

The word Vicarious explains what the audience want to the story writer. For example if you were to make a film about a mountain climber, write it so lively that the audience actually undergo or feel as if he is climbing the mountain.

Story content and form :

Content is what you tell and form is how you tell. Content is the setting, charecters and ideas. Form is arrangement of events.

If content, whats your story about is confusing or resembles the usual , then, the way you tell the story ( form ) will also be usual like any other story .There are more chances for people to loose interest in it.You must learn to place the events in the story connected by motivations from scene to scene.Select a content that you are sure that no one has written before for screen and design a form which will become your own style. The world will admire your work.

Write with dedication :

Dont write a screenplay just for sake of writing it .Its not something you do to pass exam.
Many think screen writing is easy as
it looks short and simple and mostly ends with in 125 pages.

Good stories enriches human spirit :

Story telling in its purest form is actually a service to humanity.Imagine how many of us will be interested to learn from a scientist or a economists, sociologists or a spiritualist. But we still like to watch a film and subconciously , we learn from movies.

The Art of Story telling is the best way to touch human hearts and create impact in their lives.

People watch movies to go through meaning of the story with emotional heights sometimes which excites them with joy and laughter and sometimes with extremely painful emotions ultimately the end must sync in harmony with their emotional and intellectual needs. What i said in the seminar is not wrong. Its the flow of emotions - Happiness, Thrill, humour, fear ,failures, sarrows and success that the audience needs but above all, its the story.

Your audience sacrifice their world to see yours :

We all must realize being a filmmaker that we alone have the ability to cage millions into a Big dark room. Cinema is the only medium in which hundreds of thousands can be made to sit silently in darkness. Its a funny comment as you could imagine, if its really possible to keep thousands of people in darkness in any other case. This is the salutation given by audience to every filmmaker. They are in the theatre believing in you for a unique human experience.

Next time you think about working.
Its your story that needs more work.

Write.Rewrite and write.

A beautiful story.

Being a filmmaker with little knowledge and little investment :

Few guys like me neither have enough money to join in a big film school ,film workshops or buy expensive books to read( some like me dont have patience to read ).But they want to be a filmmaker or may be they have a passion for doing something in this industry. Its good to join film school or assist some good filmmaker/ film technician to learn the Art. what ever u do remember, when you actually work for your film, you dont repeat what you learnt, you are creating something new with what you have learnt before.

so why not be a filmmaker right away ? :

sounds funny but thats what i preferred to do.Though i have assisted few film techinicians for three years and done a small time course in a film school, i have to honestly accept that i dont have the knowledge that a professional Ad filmmaker or documentary filmmaker has , not to mention a feature filmmaker.

Tips to get started as a independent filmmaker :

Read filmmaking Books

Even if you are lazy like me please for gods sake borrow filmmaking books from your friends or anyone and start reading.Read the basics of screenplay writing, basics of cinematography, basics and direction and basics of whats happening in todays post production industry. You can read actors gossips but it wont make you a filmmaker unless it inspires you for writing a story.

Form a Team

Am sure there will be few guys around you who also wanna be a filmmaker.collect them togather and form a team. This helps a lot unless theres no ego and money problems amoung you.I prefer working alone and so far i have managed.

You must do everything :

A independent filmmaker must know to handle a video camera, direct and also edit.It helps a lot if you know to do all these things by yourself.Trust me its easy to learn.

Learn from training dvds and online articles and tutorials :

There are many companies who make wonderful training videos which will help you learn basics of shot division to editing softwares. If film schools seems very expensive for you , consider such training dvds as option to learn new softwares.

Buy a good mini dv camera :

Yes its HD era but we are poor filmmakers who must be happy with Mini Dv cameras.I love my camera which looks like a handy cam. When i shoot professional videos with it, first question many ask is " will this camera do the work we need ".I will say "broadcast quality !! dont worry !! "

Choose which editing system you like and which one is affordable for you :

First invest around 1500 $ to build a good computer with which you can edit your video works. Then purchase a video editing software and capture card as per your ease of use. This step if for people who have some experience in post production.NLE softwares are available from 400 $ to 2000 $ with which you can even edit a feature film. Remember theres training dvds to teach you for using these softwares.

Make some personal films :

No one is gonna pay you for doing all this but now you have a film industry of your own.You can shoot. You can edit and you can make people watch. To begin start with 5 to 10 minute films, try to make documentaries , music videos etc. This is to train yourself. In filmmaking you learn by doing mistakes.

Market yourself :

Ok now you must make money. This part if left to you. I have my own ways to survive as a filmmaker and hope you also will find yours.May God bless you with good knowledge , equipments, team and clients.

5 steps to be a Digital Filmmaker :

1.Mini DV or HDv camera - select a good mini dv or Hdv camera .Read reviews and use forums in few filmmaking websites to decide what to buy with in your budget.

2.Select a Good editing system : Its always better to have your own small post production house. If you dont have basic knowledge about editing softwares too, never give up.Its easy to learn to use softwares like Avid, Final cut pro , adobe premiere and sony vegas etc. You dont need to be in film school to be a digital filmmaker. There are many tutorials available for learning softwares. Its the aesthetics of filmmaking that needs more training.

3.A external mirco phone and a on camera video light will be of great use.

4.Always take multiple shots in various angle. This will help you in editing.Digital filmmaking allows you to shoot hours of raw materials with out worries as the tapes are very cheap.

5.If you are a upcoming filmmaker please feel free to write to me.If i am free , i will reply you with the little knowledge i have.

Winning your Digital Filmmaking dream

Everyone wants to make a short film , documentary or something trendy ,creative with their mini dv or Hd cam. These days when video blogging , video sharing has become common to internet users all over the world,i see many works that comes around you as a time pass.Free.funny and freaky.

where does a film student or a aspiring filmmmaker stand in this crowd. He will have more knowledge than these trendy home video makers but after all he is one amoung the crowd. The worst thing that could happen is the next generation filmmakers are loosing their mind towards creating simple works rather than one that demand high thinking and hard work.

With sites like withoutabox.com comping up, its easy to submit a film to film festivals. The young filmmaker of today has many options to choose but have they lost the pain it takes to go through a creative process.Have they lost patience in taking time to comeout with a good rewritten well edited screenplay.Has the HD cam shooting made them get excited about technology than the emotions and life of their story.Has the editing in cutting edge softwares reduced our presence of mind. When a director sits in editing room, he immediately wants a output. When mind is in futuretense the present work suffers.

90 percent of we young filmmakers might be in a race to win with out realizing where we are running. Finally when we finish making a film, if we have changed out habits and mind set a little bit , we would have created a better film than what has comeout.

I have proof for what i am writing about.Yes 90 % of short films, feature films and documentary films sent to film festivals are supposed to be unwatchable. Not as a art form and not as a entertainer. If you come across someone who works for a popular film festival , you can listen to many stories about how horrible films are made by professionals and wanna be professionals.

Be a Filmmaker with mind of artists , warriors of ancient times :

HDv , DV,Mini Dv are cheap compared to film. That doesn't in anyway must let us shoot hours of raw material with out deep involvement in every single shot that is recorded. The technology can provide as cheap materials but human need for a beautiful movie experience remains the same.Lets work hard like the artists and warriors of ancient times to create history with new technology.
